On the Nature of the Chill-producing Principle in Antipneumococcus Serum
نویسندگان
چکیده
1. By means of a test method, which is described, the presence or absence of the chill-producing principle in antipneumococcus serum may be determined. 2. This principle may be present in normal blood or serum, homologous as well as heterologous, and the measures employed to obtain an antibody solution are not essential factors in its formation. 3. The chill reaction may be mitigated by the administration of nitrites and by opium and antipyretics. It is doubtful whether this fact offers any practical therapeutic application. 4. The reaction has no relationship to anaphylaxis or to certain toxic effects of drawn blood which have been studied by Freund, Starling and others. 5. The chill-principle appears to be formed only in blood which has been allowed to stand. Our experiments do not show that the reaction is dependent on formed elements, fibrinogen, or lipoids. 6. Anticoagulants, filtration, dialysis and moderate heating are without effect in removing the principle from the solution containing it. 7. By changes in the sodium chloride and hydrogen ion concentration in antibody solutions an acid globulin and an alkaline globulin fraction may be obtained. The acid globulin fraction, whether or not phospholipin is present, contains the greater part of the chill-principle and a small part of the antibody substance; the alkaline globulin fraction contains the greater part of the antibody substance and a smaller part of the chill-principle. The acid globulin fraction is not itself the chill-principle but serves as a carrier of this, probably through an adsorptive process.

On the Presence in Antipneumococcus Serum of Type-specific Protective Antibody Not Neutralized by Homologous Specific Soluble Substance
The mutual relationship of the anticarbohydrate precipitins and the protective action in antipneumococcus sera to the soluble specific substance was investigated. The assumption is made that there exists in antipneumococcus serum, type-specific protective antibody which is distinct from the anticarbohydrate precipitins and is not neutralized by the soluble specific substance. This assumption is...
متن کاملStudies on Antiblastic Immunity
Antipneumococcus serum under certain conditions apparently inhibits or retards the metabolic activities of the homologous pneumococcus. Antipneumococcus serum exhausted of its agglutinin content possesses no inhibitory properties. The degree of inhibitory action of antipneumococcus serum parallels its agglutinating power. No evidence has been found to indicate that the inhibition of the metabol...
متن کاملSpecific Proteins of Antipneumococcus Sera Ii. Immunological Fractionation 01~ Type I Antipneumococcus Horse and Rabbit Sera
In the preceding paper of this series (1) it was reported that the amount of specific antibody precipitable by the capsular polysaccharide is related to the mouse protective value of Type I antipneumococcus serum only under certain well defined conditions. Thus with Type I antipneumococcus rabbit serum there was a direct proportionality between the two determined values. The protective ratio fo...

The aim of this study was to investigate the chill and heat requirements of flower buds of 8 foreign and domestic commercial cultivars and promising domestic almond genotypes during 2019 and 2020 as a factorial experiment based on a completely randomized design with 3 replications and two factors including five cultivar type (Tuono, Nanpariel, Mamaie, Shahroud 12, Rabi) and three genotypes (1-1...
متن کاملA Further Study on the Biologic Classification of Pneumococci
1. At least three subgroups of Pneumococcus Type II may be recognized by specific immune reactions. They have been called Subgroups II A, II B, and II X. 2. That the organisms of these three subgroups are biologically related to Pneumococcus Type II is shown by the following facts: (a) Agglutination with Antipneumococcus Serum II. (b) Protection with Antipneumococcus Serum II, except Subgroup I...
